ENGLISH tenor Alfie Boe, like many classically trained vocalists, has released an album mixing wonderfully interpreted standards with modern “popera”.
Hailing from Blackpool, Boe boasts a startling set of pipes — check out the uplifting and power-packed opener Being Alive for proof — and will join our own Olivia Newton John at the Opera House for three special shows in early March.
Classics like Maria, When I Fall In Love (as popularised by Doris Day) and the Disney hit When You Wish Upon A Star are as tidy as you’d expect.
A duet with Led Zeppelin frontman Robert Plant is making waves across the globe and is a real album highlight while Nick Jonas also lends a pretty decent voice on Empty Chairs At Empty Tables, from Les Miserables. Quite brilliant.
Special mention for Sinatra’s It Was A Very Good Year.
RATING: ★★★½
