SOMEWHERE between Lady GaGa and Ke$ha fits California Gurl Katy Perry.
Delivering unabashed electronic pop, Perry’s second album, like her debut, has several strong, single-worthy candidates but unfortunately there’s plenty of filler, too.
The lead-off singles, California Gurls and Teenage Dream, like almost all of her previous releases charted brilliantly and there’s several others here to follow.
One such effort is the down-tempo Who Am I Living For? which is a departure for Perry. In fact, you could easily picture Rihanna releasing this.
Firework should follow as a single sometime soon, and will be a hit, but it’s no masterpiece by any means.
And the retro rock-edged Circle The Drain boasts plenty of attitude and is said to be about former boyfriend Travie McCoy’s drug problems.
RATING: ★★★
IN SHORT: Predictable
