METALLICA — from metal gods to mere session musos.
That’s the impression you get on Lulu, a strange collaboration between one of metal’s most successful acts and crusty rock veteran Lou Reed.
Add to that, the lyrics are based on German plays which Reed delivers, for the most part, in a droll, spoken word.
Metallica may provide the musical backdrop but this is not a Metallica album.
It’s a taxing long-winded listen and while James Hetfield does jump in on vocals intermittently (The View), it’s generally a tease.
Pumping Blood and Mistress Dread do have their punchy Metallica moments, but Reed’s lyrics are drunken and nonsensical. A common theme.
Iced Honey is vaguely commercial and catchy, Cheat On Me is likable but bonkers and Junior Dad would be tender if it wasn’t 20 minutes (!!) long.
