Trap for novices: beware of geeks bearing gifts

MALCOLM TURNBULL would be glad Peter Costello announced his resignation last week because had he not, tongues would be flapping again about the leadership.

The Coalition had a prima facie case against Wayne Swan regarding the attention he, his office and Treasury gave to John Grant's finance request. There was enough there for a solid week of parliamentary jousting and maximum potential to inflict damage.

But Turnbull went for the ultimate prize, the Prime Minister, Kevin Rudd.

An email that linked Rudd's office to representations made on behalf of Grant was a smoking gun indeed, if only it were real.

It would show Rudd had misled Parliament, egregiously. A sackable offence.

Yesterday's revelation (June 22) that it was a fake opened a great big hole in the fence, and the Government piled on through.

By the day's end the Coalition benches were a picture of misery. Faces told of an opportunity lost.

Turnbull and Joe Hockey went through the motions of questioning Swan over the treatment of finance requests by car dealers, but there was no passion.

They had overreached and lost the day. They had based their big push on a bent email.

Ironically, when Turnbull was "bullying" Rudd's economic adviser Andrew Charlton at the mid-winter ball, presumably over the email, Liberals from South Australia were outside on their phones.

They were occupied with the imminent dumping of the state's Opposition leader, Martin Hamilton Smith, who fell from grace after trying to stitch up the Premier, Mike Rann, with what turned out to be a sheaf of fake emails.

In retrospect, Turnbull et al should have sniffed trouble given the vehemence of Rudd's parliamentary denials of any wrongdoing.

Rudd may be a relative political greenhorn; the ute shows that. But he is no idiot. After checking thoroughly, he was emphatic in Parliament about neither he nor his office ever passing on a request on behalf of Grant.

Yet the Opposition thought it had them both on toast.

"The Prime Minister and the Treasurer have used their offices and taxpayers' resources to seek advantage for one of their mates, and then lied about it to Parliament," Turnbull thundered on Friday night.

By yesterday afternoon the cigar had exploded, and Turnbull said: "The email was not created or composed, nor was the text provided to the News Limited journalist Steve Lewis by anybody in the Opposition."

Traps for young players.

How can Turnbull make such an accusation and not get the shaft?

"Rudd is no idiot. After checking thoroughly..." Then the Federal Police found the email. Fake or not - the case leading up to the last email 'in question' is reams of pages and pages of personalised discretional influence. Julie Bishop had a handful of the Feb. emails and today April emails were even more convincing. And when questioned Mr Swan answered "No" to any answers. The height of Ministerial arrogance is "No" when it is asked you give a reasonable explanation, not call then a "moron". Retracted but still 'high & mighty'- above all questioning, so he thinks. Rudd & Swan authorised OzCar to fill the deep hole left wide when they split the financial guarantee of APRA. Rudd justs talks endlessly and Harry Jenkins is the one who lets him have centre stage- til enough is enough. Your interpretation of "an idiot" is very different to mine. Dishonesty makes a man an idiot when the Federal Police 'suddenly find' the email- fake or not when Rudd couldn't find it- "We checked thoroughly" Bollocks. He's just lied again.

I am wondering if the eggs thrown at Godwin Gresch's home were left over from the egg now covering the faces of Turn`bully' and his brain-dead cronies. I also wonder as to whether the Opposition would have resisted committing the act they are accusing the Government of enacting had the opportunity arose if the Coalition were in power. I was also astounded earlier in the `ute-gate' fiasco when I was wathing a replay of Parliament Question Time on my ABC. When Messrs. Rudd and Swan were holding the floor there were no jibes or snide comments coming from the Opposition Bench, only complete silence. This was a rare occurence considering that Members of both sides of Parliament usually behave like pratts.

I think the Libs have every reason to be a bit shaken, when their Leader and Treasurer left them in the lurch. I wonder how Labor would feel if Rudd and Gillard left together? Turnball may be a gentleman, but he's not cut out to be PM. That disloyal Peter Costello, is only out for himself, that's clear. He may have been better had Howard been more gracious and handed over the leadership at a respectable time. Family First seems to be the best choice at the moment. One thing Rudd got right, is the rejection of gay marriages. It's so stupid I can't describe my annoyance.
