Speer's brilliant victory

12/02/2001 1:00:00 AM
In his march to the final he took out defending champion Rohan Kerr of Ulverstone before accounting for three seed Danny Gotowski. In a classic and entertaining three set final Speer wore down number one seed Le Fevre to clinch his first grass court championship 1-6, 7-5, 6-3.

The all Northern final was a thriller that had the crowd on the edge of their seats as first one then the other gained the ascendancy.

Although tiring and disappointed at his loss Nathan Le Fevre teamed with Danny Gotowski to take out the open men's doubles final. They defeated Tim Johnston and Andrew McCormack 6-2, 6-4.

In the open women's singles Alison Wigston regained her throne after a straight sets win in the final. Playing in ideal conditions Wigston continued her recent winning streak with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Sharon Thompson. Although Thompson played extremely well Wigston's serving proved the difference on the day.

RESULTS - Semi finals - N. Le Fevre (Lton) d R. Wynwood 6-2, 6-0 (forfeit) second set due to injury; J. Speer (Lton) d D. Gotowski 6-2, 7-6.

Final: J. Speer d N. Le Fevre 1-6, 7-5, 6-3.
