Angry protest at court decision

28/08/2002 7:47:07 AM
A MAN shook his chair violently, slammed the dock with his hand and stood upon his chair in anger over a decision at Orange Local Court yesterday.

John Wayne Scott, 27, of no fixed address, was refused bail by magistrate Jan Stevenson over an alleged assault occasioning actual bodily harm outside the Ophir Tavern on Saturday, August 24.

Scott was already on conditional bail for similar charges in Brewarrina.

After the display in the courtroom Scott was taken by police out of the room and swore loudly.

He was heard clearly in the courtroom.

Scott was then placed in the courthouse holding cell and proceeded to further vent his anger by banging loudly on the cell door throughout court proceedings.

It was alleged in a police statement of facts that the female victim approached Scott outside the Ophir Tavern on the day in question and asked for a cigarette.

He responded by assaulting her with a large stick causing lacerations to her hand.

Scott was later arrested and charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

Scott is due to reappear in Brewarrina Local Court on Monday, September 9 to answer the charges.
