A public meeting is being held in Yass on Thursday, November 27 to enable Yass Shire residents to voice their opinions on State Government proposals, which will dismember the Shire of Yass and divide its functions between Goulburn and Queanbeyan.

The State Government is proposing to create a Southern Tablelands Council comprising Goulburn, Crookwell, Mulwaree Gunning and the northern parts of Yass Shire and a Capital City Regional Council lumping in the rest of Yass with Queanbeyan City Council, Yarrowlumla, Tallagandra, parts of Gunning and Cooma Monaro. The Yass Shire will be dissolved, Yass itself together with Murrumbateman, Binalong, Bowning, Bookham, Wee Jasper will all go into the new Capital City Regional Council administered from Queanbeyan.

Yass Mayor Nic Carmody said the consequences for Yass would be job losses, reduced services and economic downturn, dilution and loss of representation.

"The proposal is reminiscent of the Wran Government's merger of municipalities and shires, which resulted in a widespread reduction in services and effective representation for shire residents," he said.

Crookwell Shire Council will have a public meeting next Wednesday at 7.30pm in the Memorial Hall to inform the community and answer questions about the amalgamation.
