Pony Club

Once again another year has come to a close for the Kangaroo Island Pony Club, with our X-mass wind up held at Charmaine and Brian Jones picturesque property on the banks of the Cygnet River.

Under the beautiful red gums we gathered for our formal line up and gear check, which was undertaken by the South Australian Pony Club State President, Greg Bailey who came over for the day to visit our club and talk to us on a number of topics.

We broke into two groups for a ride before lunch, the older riders disappearing up the road and into a neighbouring property before returning through the back of the Jones property for a 20km ride in around two hours.

The younger riders stayed closer to the house and enjoyed activities on the banks of the Cygnet River.

After a lovely lunch we presented our annual show trophies and the Scout Trophy which is presented to the most improved pony club rider in the last 12 months, this was presented to Ella Dunstan who with a new horse this year has excelled in leaps and bounds.

The Sue Sobey Trophy for the most points gained over the three shows was once again won by Jessica Florance for the fourth year in a row, however she has won this trophy on three different horses.

The Brian Fernandez trophy was hotly contested this year by James Meyer, Ella Dunstan and Hayley Howard over the three shows with Hayley Howard gaining a number of points on the novelties at Parndana Show, advancing her ahead of the others to win the trophy.

This year we have a new trophy donated by the Dunstan family for the pony club member under the age of 10 years who once again gains the most points of the three shows.

The Bob Dunstan Trophy was presented by Betty Dunstan whose husband Bob had a lot to do with the Kangaroo Island Pony Club in its early days and even hosted the rallies on their property during the 70's.

The recipient for this trophy was Evie Dunstan who deservedly won this trophy with exceptional results from the shows.

Danielle Pratt was finally present with her D* certificate after about five years, and James Meyer was to be presented with his C Certificate if he was not off catching Marron with Cane!!

This certificate incorporates a written exam as well as ridden, which James undertook on the mainland.

Soon after presentations Father Christmas visited our gathering and all children both big and small that sat on Santa's lap received a bag of lollies.

It was a fantastic day to end a great year for the Kangaroo Island Pony Club, rallies will resume in February 2005.
