Croquet Club news
Around the courts
South Coast Shield
For the last few weeks the Narooma Croquet Club has been preparing to host the annual South Coast Shield competition. Most of the many tasks have been allocated now, and we are looking forward to a successful event.
It will be played on four full-sized courts (all three bowling greens will be used as well as the Murray Court) on Friday, June 3 (all day) and Saturday, June 4 (in the morning). At the end of the competition, the players from visiting clubs will join our members for a barbecue lunch and presentations.
This competition is unique in this state because it's played as a team event, with each club nominating a team to play two singles and two doubles matches, in a round robin format. It has proved popular in past years, and we expect it to be an enjoyable occasion.Spectators are welcome to come along.
Biggest morning tea
We held a successful morning tea to raise money for the Cancer Council of Australia on Sunday.
Members provided cakes and slices to be sold, and our thanks go to Pauline Wilcock for organizing the event.
Illness prevented Pauline from being present on the day and we hope she will soon be feeling better.
Welcome back
On Sunday we were pleased to welcome back Lorraine Cook, who has been holidaying in Queensland, and John and June Birch, who have been touring Tasmania.
Congratulations
Our congratulations go once again to Kaye O'Loughlin. Besides being one of our regular croquet players, Kaye is a fine table tennis player. During the week she and her partner were runners-up in the +50 section of the NSW Closed Competition.
Tuesday matches
On Tuesday we played games on two courts, to enable members who are competing in the South Coast Shield to practice on the bowling green surface. The croquet balls travel much faster and further on the bowling greens, which adds a considerable challenge to the game. Some of the results were: Noel O'Hehir and Sandra Bird defeated Jean Murray and Pat Koerber 21-17; Margaret Carpenter defeated Pauline Wilcock 17-15; Max Murray and Helen Owen drew 18-18.
Friday practice games
Once again we used the bowling green as well as our court for practice matches. Some of the results were: Helen Owen defeated Margaret Carpenter 13-10; Jean Murray and Robin Shenton defeated Norma Fern and Pat Koerber 16-13; Sandra Bird defeated Julian Owen 21-10; and in a 3-ball Scarborough game, Maria Simpson 13 defeated Thelma Colling 9 and Ray Simpson 8. During this last match, Maria "pegged out" for the first time, and Thelma scored her first 3-hoop break. Congratulations to both of them!
Sunday social games
In spite of a very chilly breeze, a good turnout of players participated in Sunday's matches.
Some of the results were: playing golf croquet - Helen Owen and Susan Shenton defeated Pearl Hanson and Melva Horsington 8-7 and Kaye O'Loughlin defeated Lorraine Cook 6-4: playing Association rules - Sandra Bird and Jinnae defeated Jean Murray and Pat Koerber 10-7; Charlie Koerber and June Birch defeated Noel O'Hehir and Judy Favier 14-10; Robin Shenton and Helen Owen defeated Pearl Hanson and John Birch 10-5; and Lorraine Cook and Kaye O'Loughlin drew 9-9 with Susan Shenton and Julian Owen.
Bowlo Dance Group
Firstly, I must apologize for missing last week's column in the Narooma News, but here we are back again to let you know what is going on in our group.
Another good roll-up last week, with Vicki and Beau revising the Sally Ann Cha Cha, which we started to learn a fortnight ago, and by the end of tonight should know it right through. We did have a few disruptions during the night, with the State of Origin Rugby League, but the ladies handled it OK.
Jon has been out recruiting dancers, and is at present teaching five ladies the basic dance steps. The only problem is that we need the men to partner them, and that is the hardest bit to cover - so any of you gentlemen who would like to learn to dance, come on down.
It was a pleasant surprise to see Val and Doug back from their holiday down south. Both looked fit and well. Marci and Ron are back from the Apple Isle and they had a great time too.
Our spot dance winners this week were the ladies, Beverley, Sylvia, Mary and Betty and (you guessed) Doug won the lucky door prize.
Well, that's the news for last week. See you all tonight at 7pm at the 'Bowlo'. Remember dancing keeps you young and fit.
