If only it were a perfect world, there would be no reckless drivers, no highway fatalities, no one injured by unsafe driving practices.
If only it were a perfect world, we would not need the Westroads blitz.
But the world is not perfect.
Australia still has too many traces of the convict culture that bucks authority, rules and regulations, and it appears many of us are willing to risk someone else's life to do so.
We like to think of ourselves a civilised country, a kind country, with educated, thoughtful residents.
But when it comes to highway safety, it appears we still have a long way to go before we reach the reality of our ideals.
In the meantime, it appears we need to see a policeman with a big stick who will punish you if you are bad.
One day, in the perfect world, we will not need a Westroads blitz.
