Mustangs aim for five wins in a row

1/06/2007 9:33:40 AM
THE Coastline Macleay Valley Mustangs are looking to continue their recent run of success.

They return home to Verge St Oval this Sunday for a big clash against the much- improved Coffs Harbour Comets in three grades.

The first grade match should be a keenly fought affair, with both teams equal on the ladder and a win will see either club push their way in the top five at the mid-way point in the competition.

The Mustangs success over the past five weeks has been built around a solid team effort by all members in the squad, including the players that back up from the lower grades each week and with each win.

The Mustangs forwards have led the way in recent weeks, with David Dungay and Grant Schubert consistently among their best.

Richard Dixon has shown the younger forwards the way and along with other forwards Ryan Partridge, Clint McCabe, Coby Meehan and Vince Lockwood the Mustangs have built a solid, hardworking pack.

Willie Lockwood appears to be enjoying his positional change to lock and he now has the freedom to bob up wherever he wants and inject himself into the play whenever.

In the backs, Michael Davis has shined each week since his move to five-eighth. Paul Owens, prefers the hooking position, but has led the backs well with his move to half-back.

Kurt Sheldrick is revelling in his move to the centres and along with Michael Judd and youngster Todd Cooper, they have certainly tightened things up and continue to give the team drive out wide.

The back three David Scholes, David and Nathan Davis have continually shone in each game.

Coach Mark Morrison is pleased with the overall improvement shown in the team. He feels quietly confident going into Sunday's game that the boys can replicate their success, providing we receive an equal share of possession and maintain pressure on the opposition throughout the match.

The Mustangs are looking for huge support on Sunday to keep their run going, so I encourage everyone to get to Verge St early and watch what should be three great games of Rugby League.
