Industry future

Plans for the future use of Beckwith Park facilities are well under way.

Damien Brown, Beckwith Park chief executive officer, said there is less than two years remaining on the Foster’s lease of the site and he is starting to explore “some amazing” options for the various facilities.

Mr Brown said there will be warehouse and winemaking spaces available as well as exciting avenues for a convention/exhibition centre - complete with plenty of car parking, and some iconic spots for creative renovation.

“There is a lot of history here,” he said.

But there are also modern winemaking and temperature-controlled storage areas at Beckwith Park, alongside the heritage-listed sites that could potentially house a new cellar door or even a micro-brewery.

In the future Mr Brown hopes the site will become a multi-tenanted industrial park, with a focus clearly on the wine industry.

“There will be opportunities for all sorts of industry connections,” he said.

One of the more interesting buildings, as far as history and renovation potential is concerned, is the TST site - located on the corner of Tolley and Tanunda Road.

“It was one of the last big stills in South Australia,” Mr Brown said.

“And it is a really interesting building.

“For us it is an important icon, and has been significant in the progression of the Barossa.”

When the distillery was closed down everything was left behind.

“We hope there is a story - a future - here, probably not operating as a distillery again, but there might be potential for a micro-brewery or a cellar door,” Mr Brown said.

The vision the Beckwith Park owners have is to see people using these spaces, preserving the history and making a future for the site.

The Foster’s lease on the site finishes in about 21 months - although the company will retain the premium red winemaking facility at the southern end of the site, as well as a long-term lease on the Penfold’s cellar door facility.

“Full credit to Foster’s the team and staff here have been preserving the history of the site,” Mr Brown said. “And we hope spaces like the Tolley distillery can be beautifully restored and used.

“As Foster’s move out we can bring in various smaller tenants.”

With a huge amount of warehouse space and an operating bottling plant there will be real possibilities for a viable wine business park.

14/11/2008 | There isn't any doubt any more about whether Deputy PM, Julia Gillard, has the killer instinct. The problem tends more to be how to drag her off the victim's body.
