THE old saying is that you should never mix business with pleasure but rising tennis star Jarmila Gajdosova is excited about teaming up with fiance Sam Groth at next week’s Australian Open.
Gajdosova, bounced out of the Sydney International yesterday in straight sets by world No.4 ranked Russian Elena Dementieva, said playing with her Australian fiance in the mixed doubles was something she can’t wait to experience after disappointment last year.
“We lost 10-8 in the third set in a tiebreaker,” she said of the pair’s 2008 experience.
“It was first round actually. They (Erlich/Chuang) were No.3 seeded. The match was suspended for five days because of the rain, so we started on Monday and finished on Saturday or something.
“It was good; it was fun. I think we match actually pretty well together. We need to play a little more matches together but I think it’s good.”
Asked if tensions on court can sometimes lead to lovers’ tiffs off it, Gajdosova said it wasn’t an issue.
“No, not at all,” she said.
“It’s actually not bad except I chunked a double (fault) in the match point, so that didn’t help.
“He played mixed doubles for the first time, so he was a little bit nervous and didn’t want to mess it up for me.”
The 194cm Groth will make his grand slam debut next week after picking up a wildcard on Monday.
And Gajdosova said she was delighted the mixed doubles won’t be Groth’s only focus at the Open.
“It’s really great for him,” she said.
“Hopefully he will get a good draw and play well.”
