 Abortion protests ‘a failure’

Abortion protests ‘a failure’

18 May, 2011 01:00 AM
A DOCTOR at Albury’s Fertility Control Clinic says abortions have increased at the centre since right-to-life protesters began staging weekly vigils there.

Dr Kathy Lewis travels from Melbourne every week to run the Albury clinic and said members of the Helpers of God’s Precious Infants may be sabotaging their own efforts to make women reconsider a termination.

“In my experience they’re not turning people away,” she said.

Dr Lewis said the clinic’s bookings were up “because everybody knows we’re here”, though she would not provide figures.

Dr Lewis said the anti-abortionists were harassing her clients and breaching their privacy by filming them entering the clinic.

She said she had her own footage of members of the group “chasing people across the street”.

“They have backed off a little bit but I think their very presence is very intimidating, it makes women feel under threat,” Dr Lewis said.

“A lot of them are a lot more stressed, I spend a lot more time reassuring them.”

The anti-abortion group call themselves “side-walk counsellors” and want to distribute information and provide advice to women considering a termination.

However Dr Lewis, who is trained in clinical psychology, said women at the clinic had all the support and information they needed to help make their decision.

She said she talked to every woman who was considering an abortion to ensure they were absolutely sure about their decision, and would refer them to a clinical psychologist if she had any doubts.

“If someone says ‘I’m not willing to talk about it’, I say ‘I really have to know’,” Dr Lewis said.

“I really have to make sure they’re not coerced into their decision.

“The last thing I would do is put someone through a procedure they’re not sure about.”

Asked if she would consider changing the time or venue of the clinic to throw off the protesters, Dr Lewis said it was something that had already been attempted without success.

“I’ve done that before and all they do is ring up and pretend they’re patients to find out what day the clinic is running,” she said.

Dr Lewis said she appreciated the efforts of a group of Albury students who are organising a demonstration against the presence of the right-to-life group tomorrow.

“Yes I really appreciate it, it goes to show that there’s that feeling out there,” she said.

“If you only hear one side of the story you start doubting your decisions.

“The reasons people choose to have terminations are varied, they may still be at school, they may have had a baby six or seven months ago, or they may be 45 years old with teenage children.”

So, are the protesters distributing information about contraception?

It's a joke that these protestors call themselves "sidewalk counsellors". This is just a smokescreen to deflect being charged with harrassment which is their real agenda.

If these protesters really wanted to conduct a "peaceful protest", why aren't they protesting outside state parliament?

The fact that they chase patients down the street and across the road (when the patients clearly do not want to engage them) proves that their real agenda is to intimidate and harass patients which is a chargeable offence. However unfortunately, few patients are prepared to spend time in court fighting them.

The way to deal with these protesters is not to abuse them, but to clearly state that you do not want to talk to them. If they continue to harass you, call the police and demand to make a statement to the effect that you were harassed (eg. you told them to leave you alone but they ignored you. Or that they blocked your path by stepping in front of you or touched you while you were approaching the clinic)

How do these people afford to spend the day protesting outside clinics around Sydney & Albury in the middle of a working week?

I hope my taxes aren't paying for their unemployment benefits while they do this!

So...if the Helpers film themselves for their own protection it is “breaching privacy” but if Dr Lewis films the same people in same place that is OK? Kind of debunks the whole argument against the people praying for having a camera. It seems there are more than one “covert camera” at the clinic and that the clinic got in first!

The Helpers' video footage is proof against false accusations of harassment. There is no publicising or identifying of women.

I wonder why, if these people are doing such a great community service, did they need a photo with their backs turned. It's OK for them to film others, but when the shoe is on the other foot, they hide.

How about you spend spare time actually helping the community, or better still, get a life of your own and stop sticking your noses in everyone else's.

Apparently taking still images with a camera is illegal but video footage is ok. I don't quite know how this works as video footage is just 25 still images taken every second. What happens if someone edits the video footage to extract the still images? I don't think this law has been thought through. All filming or photographing of others should be illegal without their consent.

So to check out this whole issue with the "harrassment", why don't a couple of Plainclothes go down and act their part - see how they're treated?

That would certainly be an accurate way of performing random checks.

Or someone sets up another car with another camera/microphone to combat theirs and focus on their behaviour?

Who has time to stand around outside clinics? Get a job.

It seems to me that the fact that so many abortions are happening just indicates that the sex education isn't working and never would either. Why are there so many? You can argue about a womens right and ignore the childs right to life. You can choose to ignore the 90,000 abortions Australia wide per year and only a tiny percentage are done to protect the mothers life. It just shows that todays morals are just gutter morals.

I am absolutely appalled by these people and the authority they think they have to meddle in the difficult decisions women sometimes have to make regarding thier own bodies. Some time ago I was interested in renting a lovely property across the road. When I arrived at the open for inspection and was greeted by this mob, I swiftly returned to the agent to tell them no thanks. I just couldn't live with the deep anger I would feel everytime I had to walk past these so -called 'helpers'. What a shame.
