Albury river steady as Lake Hume hits 62%

07 Sep, 2010 12:00 AM
NOREUIL Park and Albury Swim Centre escaped flooding yesterday as the river level at the Union Bridge gauge remained fairly steady at about 3.3 metres, well below the “minor flood” level of 4.3 metres.

The Bureau of Meteorology predicts it will not rise any higher.

But the Murray’s high flow follows a winter in which it was kept at barely one metre as the Hume Dam authorities seek to fill the storage by minimising discharges.

They have been kept at 600 megalitres a day for several weeks and the water passing Noreuil Park now is coming largely from the Kiewa River.

Lake Hume continues to rise and has surpassed 62 per cent, the highest level since February 2006.

Its volume has increased by more than 175,420 megalitres in a week, though the surface level has risen about 1.22 metres.

The Dartmouth Dam is at 41.6 per cent.

Its discharges are being kept to a minimum 200 megalitres a day.
