Albury will work with others: Glachan

07 Nov, 2009 03:06 PM
ALBURY’S Mayor has pledged to continue working with Wodonga to promote tourism on the Border, despite indications her city may set up its own visitor information centre.

Alice Glachan admitted this week she had concerns about the council-funded tourism body, Destination Albury-Wodonga, in the wake of general manager Mark Byatt resigning last week.

She said Destination Albury-Wodonga’s effort to allow greater industry involvement in promoting the Border “could have been better” but was reluctant to comment on the fate of the organisation.

“DAW will be presenting to us in December, and depending on what they present to us and the opinions of other councillors, we will go from there,” Cr Glachan said.

“Personally, and this is just my opinion, I would like us to work more not just with Wodonga, but the whole region.”

Cr Glachan said her council’s leasing of the station master’s residence at Albury railway station, which has prompted speculation the city would use it for an information centre, did

“not necessarily” mean that would happen.

“All possibilities are open at the moment,” Cr Glachan said.

“If a tourism information centre is decided on, it could be at any number of destinations around town, and it could still be a joint space with Wodonga.”

She said Destination Albury-Wodonga could have used its budget in a more innovative fashion.

“Any work in tourism promotion is people intensive, so there was always going to be a lot of money spent on salaries,” she said.

“But I think it would be great if they could be more creative with the way they use their money.”

Albury council will meet Destination Albury-Wodonga on December 7 to decide if its contract will be extended.
