A battle of words has erupted between State Member for Burrinjuck Katrina Hodgkinson and Federal Member for Hume Alby Schultz amid allegations of seat swapping and a political party cover-up.
In a letter to the Yass Tribune (see page four), Mr Schultz alleged Ms Hodgkinson’s decision to publicly endorse councillor Geoff Frost in the recent local government election was a "typical National Party exercise in a misleading process."
Mr Schultz went on to claim the “misleading process” will see Geoff Frost run as the Hodgkinson anointed National Party candidate for the State seat of Burrinjuck, which he believes Ms Hodgkinson intends to jettison to contest the Federal seat of Hume at the next election.
Ms Hodgkinson laughed at the suggestion and asked “does Alby hear voices at night?”
“If he put as much effort into undermining the Labor party as he does undermining his own colleagues perhaps he’d have a better chance of winning the next election.”
Mr Schultz challenged Ms Hodgkinson to clear the air by “vehemently assuring” the electorate that she has “absolutely no intention” of resigning as the State member to contest the Federal seat he has held for 10 years.
“The response, ‘I have neither ruled that possibility in or out,’ is just not good enough, and should be seen as a continuation of the sham exposed at the local government election day at Yass by former mayor Nic Carmody,” Mr Schultz said.
He went one step further to reveal Ms Hodgkinson had purchased property in Berrima and is currently in the process of building a new home within the boundaries of the Hume electorate.
Ms Hodgkinson did not confirm or deny the rumours, neither did she rule out the possibility of a swap. She did, however, assert her passion for the position of Burrinjuck MP and her commitment to the people of her electorate.
“I never rule anything in and I never rule anything out.
“I love my job. I’m very committed to the people I represent, I’m very happy in my current position and I’m very happy in the area,” Ms Hodgkinson said.
“I’m not into muck-raking and making personal slights about other members of the community. It is not the way that I do business.
“Alby Schultz can say and think what he likes – that is his business,” Ms Hodgkinson continued.
Newly elected councillor Geoff Frost also laughed at the suggestion that he has a pre-arranged plan to contest Ms Hodgkinson’s vacated State seat of Burrinjuck and continue the National Party stronghold in the area.
“I think I just received a job…didn’t I?” Cr Frost asked.
“I have not thought about it [State politics]. I like to be in the business where we can get things done.”
