Angry parents demand action

01 Jul, 2009 01:00 AM
PARENTS are demanding a crossing be installed near Thurgoona’s Border Christian College after a teenage girl was yesterday hit by a car.

The student, 14, was walking her bike across Elizabeth Mitchell Drive when she was hit by a car about 8.40am.

The girl received only bruising to her leg but police were called and an ambulance transported her to hospital as a precaution.

Parent Jenni Mealor, who has an 11-year-old daughter at the school, said the incident was an outrage considering the injured girl’s mother had sent several petitions to council asking for a crossing to be installed at the exact spot where her daughter was hit.

“Parents have signed and sent three petitions to council and the RTA asking for a crossing because we’ve heard reports of several near-misses on that road just this year,” Mrs Mealor said.

“We don’t need a child to be seriously injured or killed before someone decides to do anything about it.

“Really, how hard is it to paint a few white stripes on the road?”

Acting principal Daniel Williams said many students used a path that runs through the St Hillaire estate, stops at the eastern edge of Elizabeth Mitchell Drive and continues on the western side up towards the school.

It is the same spot where the girl was hit yesterday.

”You’ve got to think like a kid,” Mr Williams said.

“There have been suggestions for students to walk to an underground crossing further up the road, but kids aren’t going to walk an extra 500m up the road just to have to walk 500m back again.”

Albury council director of engineering Brad Ferris said the council had designed a children’s crossing for Elizabeth Mitchell Drive, submitted it to the RTA and was now waiting for further funding and approval through the Safety Around Schools Program.

The RTA yesterday said it was reviewing the council’s submission.
