Anti-abortionists secretly film clinic

06 May, 2011 12:20 PM
RIGHT-to-lifers say filming the comings and goings at an Albury abortion clinic is for their self-protection and not meant to intimidate women.

They said it is legal to have the tape running from a camera in a car parked opposite the clinic.

In recent weeks The Border Mail has received ongoing complaints about the camera and constant harassment.

Police said they have received complaints also but the group was within its rights provided there was no audio or still images being recorded.

The Helpers of God’s Precious Infants have maintained a Thursday vigil outside the Englehardt Street clinic since last November.

An A-frame sign with a protest message is placed outside the clinic each time they are there.

Two people were handing out pamphlets to those entering the clinic yesterday and generally there is a group of “prayers” holding a vigil on the opposite side of the street.

Lavington mother Regina Dawson, who is expecting her fourth child, says they are there to help.

“Of course people complain about the camera but we tell them what we are telling you, it is for our protection,” she said.

“But people are being filmed all over the place, whether it be when you go into a shop or those shows like Beach Patrol and they don’t even know it.

“Some people see it as intimidation, we are told that all the time.

“But from the people we approach you will get silence, you will be told to get lost, some people will listen and not respond, and yet others want to hear what we say, they are desperate for help.

“We are here to help women.”

Lavington’s Phil Murphy, another of the “sidewalk counsellors”, said he was abused twice yesterday but believed none of the group, which includes more than 30 people, had yet been assaulted.

“One man threatened me with a ‘flogging’ if I said anything to his partner when she came out of the clinic,” he said.

“Another threatened to ‘break my jaw’ if I said a single word to either him or his partner.

“Both threats were accompanied by aggressive behaviour and colourful language.

“We can see that people might see the camera as an invasion of privacy but police are aware that we have it there and they are happy.

“We are here to offer help to girls who are going in there that don’t feel like they have a choice,” Mr Murphy said.

Mrs Dawson said they would maintain the vigil until the clinic closes.

Contradictory claiming “We are here to offer help to girls who are going in there that don’t feel like they have a choice".

Abortion is decision already made hard enough for women, without religious types peddling guilt and shame for their "choice" on the side walk.

Well done. Keep up the admirable work protesters; as women have no right to make choices about their future, or their own bodies.

this is just disgusting! People have a right to make their own choices without being harrassed by others who do not know the reasonings behind their decisions!

If you don't like it, don't do it. Because my guess is you wouldn't want someone in your face telling you what you should do if the roles were reversed.

It would have been a hard eough decision for any woman, and without know the full story who are we to judge.

Take the camera away and leave these poor women alone!

So, this is to document any threatening behaviour in response to their provocative, if peaceful protest, and to provide evidence in court if necessary.

This is disgusting. The last thing women need is these nuttesr outside the clinic making one of the hardest and most guilt-ridden decisions in their life even harder. Usually people don't go and have abortions without a valid reason. And even if they don't have a reason that others in society consider to be valid, guess what? Too bad. A woman should always have full choice and autonomy over their body. Why would you try to force someone to have a child if they didn't want it? Surely that's a recipe for societal disasters. These people should go and do something productive. Last I heard Julia Gillard was trying to increase workforce participation... maybe these folks need to go and get a real job. It's easy to criticize someone making a difficult choice, perhaps because of finances, when you have enough money not to work so you can do this kind of backward nonsense and buy fancy recording devices?

Typical religous nutcases stooping to such levels to instil fear. Can't be content with living their own lives they seem to find it necessary to tell everyone else how to live theirs. just shows how intolerant they are of people making their own decisions. Do you see people standing out in front of the church protesting? Of course not, because most people are accepting of others beliefs and choices in life.

Why do they need a camera for protection if God is on their side? They seem to lack any real faith, either in God or in a person's ability to make their own choices.

it is fair if the child may have some kind of illness but there is so many teens out there getting pregnant when there are so many people that would want a baby and cannot have one because of problems carrying health what a waste of lives

Vigil seems like the wrong word. Evokes kind-hearted strangers who've come together out of genuine compassion and kindness.

As opposed to, say, self-justifying creeps harassing vulnerable women.
