Auction for site of Ida’s house

05 Nov, 2009 01:00 AM
IDA Schubert’s old home site at Baranduda is on the market nine months after her death and 34 years after the Albury-Wodonga Corporation wanted to bulldoze her tiny cottage.

Miss Schubert, 101, died in an Albury nursing home in February, four months after she finally agreed to leave the weatherboard cottage that was her home from her birth in 1907.

The corporation bought the site from the Schubert family in 1975.

It became part of the growth centre’s 24,079 ha land bank.

At the same time, her brother Frank, since deceased, convinced the corporation to allow her to continue to stay there as long as she wanted.

Corporation staff postponed development of the 5.3ha on the Yackandandah road while it developed surrounding land as the Baranduda Range residential estate.

The cottage has now been torn down and Stockdale and Leggo Wodonga will auction it on site tomorrow at 2pm.

It is being marketed as suitable for subdivision or for a single home.

Miss Schubert was one of six children and never missed a day at school until she left at 14 to work at home milking cows by hand.

Miss Schubert and her sister Ethel also raised turkeys and pigs and operated the Baranduda post office and telephone exchange until Ethel died in 1969.

After that, Miss Schubert lived quietly with just the company of her pets, a budgie, galah, cat and a dog Patch.

She cheated death twice, surviving a bad cut with an axe and an accident that shattered her ankle when she was knocked down in Wodonga.

Miss Schubert witnessed a 1927 bushfire that destroyed an old bush school at Baranduda, and another in 1940 that burned down her small church nearby.

In her 80s she accepted some modern conveniences such as running water and bottled gas but not mains electricity.

She never married, never had a TV, never visited Sydney and never left Australia.
