Baranduda burn-off part of plan

30 Jan, 2012 01:00 AM
FIRE authorities plan an ongoing campaign of fuel reduction burning to reduce fire risk around Baranduda.

Yesterday several CFA brigades were involved in burning 1.8 kilometres of vegetation alongside the Yackandandah road.

It was co-ordinated by Baranduda brigade captain Paul Allwood, who said the area varied from 20 to 30 metres in width.

The total area burnt was about 3.5 hectares.

Mr Allwood said the vegetation had been building up in recent years.

A part of the area targeted yesterday has not been burnt in the past 15 years.

There is a rolling plan over coming years to reduce the fuel load around Baranduda.

Mr Allwood said it was likely further burns will be done in autumn.

There were 55 CFA people from the Baranduda, Wodonga West, Wodonga, Bonegilla, Kiewa and Allen’s Flat brigades; the Wodonga headquarters brigade also attended.

great more smoke for my asthma this Autumn. Why don't we send in the cattle?

Why do they bother?

You only need to clear 40m around peoples properties to make them safe.

Johnny, Are you a 'it's all about me' person???? Have a puff of your ventolin, take a teaspoon of cemet and harden the hell up. Volunteers giving 'their' time to serve their community to make it safe and all you do is complain.

Thin red line how about you get a life threatening dose of asthma and see how well you "harden the hell up", sounds like you're complaining as much as anyone.

Yes they need to burn off in some areas but the health effects of the smoke on a significant number of people in the community in my opinion have not been given enough consideration. If taking a dose of Ventolin solved the health problems for chronic respiratory sufferers during periods of intense smoke, don't you think they would just do that?

@Al Waysright, embers from a bushfire will travel more than 40 metres.

@Johnny, Cattle wont eat small twigs and branches, burning off is the easiest way to deal with overgrown and built up vegetation.

If this wasn't done, the CFA and local councils would be asked why nothing was done to prevent the risk.

It's a couple of days of slight discomfort and simply the way rural areas have to live.

Would have been nice if they informed the residents they were doing this. Not nice waking up to smoke streaming through the bedroom window at 6.00am. Consultation CFA.
