Bid to rid cemetery of rabbits

09 Feb, 2010 01:00 AM
A RABBIT eradication program got under way at Waugh Road cemetery in North Albury yesterday.

Hume Livestock Health and Pest Authority ranger Jim Abell said the control process took place in two stages: normal carrots were laid then pieces of the vegetable laced with poison followed.

“The biggest concern is the rabbits burrow under the grave and (disturb) the gravestone; they’re causing a considerable amount of damage,” Mr Abell said.

Mr Abell said such uneven ground could pose a risk to visitors.

Rabbit eradication was also carried out at the Waugh Road site and Glenmorus Gardens early in 2008.

Mr Abell said it was difficult to gauge how many rabbits were living at the Waugh Road cemetery but his observations had shown the level of infestation to be “moderate to high”.

He praised Albury Council’s decision to act quickly to address the infestation.

Council employees will collect the dead rabbits from the cemetery.
