Boroka Downs inducted into Hall of Fame

Grampians tourism operators Boroka Downs and Auswalk, have won their respective categories in the 2008 Victorian Tourism Awards.

The win completed a hat-trick for Boroka Downs, in Halls Gap, who took out the Luxury Boutique Accommodation award for the third year in succession.

Winning the category for the third consecutive year also elevated Boroka Downs into the Victorian Tourism Awards Hall of Fame. Eight businesses were inducted from the 2008 awards.

Auswalk, who operate walking holidays in the Grampians National Park, won the Adventure Tourism category, topping off a successful time for the Grampians.

The awards were announced at a special dinner on Monday night in Melbourne.

Owners of Boroka Downs, Ron and Jo Payne, attended the awards, along with Monica and Phil Colemam from Auswalk, and were delighted to complete the hat-trick of wins.

``We were over the moon,'' Ron Payne said.

``You go there not knowing what you are up against, so you can never be too confident. A list of businesses is sent out and you pick the ones you think you might be up against, but they may well be in a different category.

``That makes it difficult to go in with great confidence, but we worked harder on our submission this year. It was a bit rushed last year, but we really put a lot more time into it, knowing there is a lot of emphasis on the submissions.''

Mr Payne said it was difficult to gauge if winning the award the past three years had impacted at all on bookings.

``That is something that is not really measurable,'' he said.

``People have underlying reasons why they book at one place or another, so it's hard to measure if winning the award has had any impact.

``We do take it on board where people are from and why they chose to stay with us, but it's not really measurable if the award had anything to do with it.''

The Paynes have been at Boroka Downs for two years and said they owed a lot to the previous owners, Julian and Barbara Carr for setting the business up.

``We rang the previous owners and they were thrilled that we won the award again,'' Mr Payne said.

``They set up a brilliant business and we have just continued it on. We owe a lot to the Carrs and also to our staff who do a magnificent job.

``Jo really is the backbone of the operation and it is really hands on, but we really love it.''

Ron and Jo are originally from Newcastle in New South Wales and decided to make the tree change to the Grampians.

Mr Payne said it had been a winning move for them both.

``We figure if you have to be somewhere 24 hours a day, seven days a week, then it may as well be a place you love,'' he said.

Boroka Downs is now ineligible to enter the Victorian Tourism Awards in 2009 and Mr Payne said it may well be a blessing in disguise.

``It has been really intense the past two years, particularly this year though and I think it will be good for us to have a rest.''

16/12/2008 | So we now have desperate parents attempting to bribe teachers to get their children into a selective high school. What a sad indictment of our education policies, the holy grail of which is parental choice.
