Brady still full of cheek

6/11/2008 1:44:00 PM
After almost five months of receiving treatment for leukaemia at the Royal Brisbane Children’s Hospital, Tenterfield’s 12-year-old Brady Thrift is still full of cheek and enthusiasm, according to his father, John.

Brady is now in his third week of a new treatment cycle after suffering a severe reaction to medication almost four weeks ago.

“Each day now he is nauseous for some of it and on most days he will vomit but in between he is well, full of cheek and enthusiasm and able to walk down to South Bank where he loves to eat Subway and crepes,” Mr Thrift said.

At this stage in the treatment it is no longer the leukaemia that is making Brady sick, Mr Thrift said, but the severity of the treatment.

“Brady’s mother, Sheree, asked the oncologist if Brady would be able to make it home for his year six farewell. The answer was an emphatic ‘no’,” Mr Thrift said.

“She said that Brady’s past reactions have made everyone very nervous and that his treatment at the moment is quite severe but she did add that on the day of the farewell she would review his results and determine if it was at all possible for him to go home for one night.”

Brady has been able to visit Tenterfield recently though, before commencing his new cycle of treatment, visiting his primary school to a warm reception.

“Brady said it was one of the best days of his life,” Mr Thrift said.

Efforts to raise money for 12-year-old Brady are progressing at a fast pace. Raffle tickets for the signed and framed Gold Coast Titans jersey are still available at stores across the town or by contacting Shaun Bird at the police station.

Second prize in this raffle is now a Bundaberg Rum pack including a wallet, kit bag, t-shirt, hat and stubby coolers.

Another raffle has begun as well, for a Byron Bay ballooning package including one night for two at the Byron at Byron resort valued at $995. Tickets are available at various stores around town as well as the Sir Henry Parkes Memorial Public School, St Joseph’s and Tenterfield High.

An auction night on the back deck at the Tenterfield Tavern will be held on Saturday, November 22. A signed and framed Sydney Roosters jersey, two signed Newcastle Knights footballs, a framed Shane Warne ‘King of Spin’ print and vouchers for shops and restaurants in Tenterfield will be up for auction, plus much more.

Entertainment from three live bands and a barbecue are planned as well as raffles throughout the day. Donations are still being accepted.

B To make donations or to arrange for promised donations to be collected, call Shaun Bird on 0422234214 or at the police station on 6736 1144. 16/12/2008 | So we now have desperate parents attempting to bribe teachers to get their children into a selective high school. What a sad indictment of our education policies, the holy grail of which is parental choice.
