CHARGES have been laid against three teenagers who allegedly sparked a vicious brawl in Dean Street, Albury, last week.
Police claim the youths instigated the violence that distressed families, shoppers and traders last Thursday night.
More charges are likely today, related to the violence in West Albury later the same night as retaliation for the earlier clash.
Detective Insp Brad Blanchard, crime manager of Albury police, said the developments would send a message that such thuggish behaviour was unacceptable.
“We’ve had an investigative team on it ... and they’ve started an arrest phase,” he said.
“That type of behaviour — regardless of who is involved in it — will not be tolerated.”
Albury Mayor Patricia Gould welcomed the breakthrough.
“I hope others will take note that police eventually catch up with people who do these things,” she said.
“It’s very distressing for people who are caught in these situations — we all have a right to enjoy our city streets.”
A boy, 16, a woman, 18, and a man, also 18, have been bailed to November 18 on charges including common assault, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, affray and being armed with intent.
The bail conditions include a ban on entering the Albury CBD.
The police expect youths from both sides of the dispute, including those associated with the alleged anti-Aborigine KAC gang, to be held responsible for the racially charged attacks.
Insp Blanchard said the move would also serve as a warning for anyone threatening to renew the violence during tonight’s shopping or at this weekend’s Albury Show.
Several community members had expressed concerns to The Border Mail that tempers would flare again at the family event.
Insp Blanchard said no extra officers would patrol the show but police would move swiftly to stop trouble.
