Burger bug: Eatery closes as salmonella cases flood health services

22 Jan, 2010 10:39 PM
ALMOST 100 salmonella cases are now under investigation as the Dean Street eatery at the centre of the outbreak yesterday closed its doors.

Health authorities say seven cases have been confirmed as salmonellosis but expect that number to rise.

All are linked to eating at The Burger Bar from Thursday to Saturday last week.

It is now believed a batch of aioli, a garlic mayonnaise that includes raw egg, may be the cause of the salmonella outbreak.

Ninety-six cases are now under investigation.

More than 70 people have been interviewed by Albury’s public health unit and countless blood tests are outstanding.

A total of 69 suspected cases have been seen at emergency departments at Wodonga and Albury since last Friday.

Anecdotal evidence suggests the number of people hospitalised with the potentially deadly bug is also on the rise.

The Border Mail was yesterday made aware of at least a further four cases where the victims were hospitalised or remain in hospital.

There is also growing community anger that the outbreak was not made public until late on Thursday with one man

battling the illness on his own in the mistaken belief it was a bad case of gastro.

Health authorities yesterday confirmed they were first made aware of a possible problem last Sunday.

Burger Bar owners Adrian Whitehead and Karen Davis last night posted a message to customers on their restaurant’s Facebook page.

The message confirmed they had closed the restaurant for the weekend until tests confirmed the source of the salmonella.

“Working together this week with NSW Health and the NSW Food

Authority, we are almost certain that this outbreak has been caused by an infected batch of eggs (or maybe just one egg, that’s all it takes) we have received from a local farm,” they said.

The couple said as soon as they were notified there was an issue and that the eggs were suspected they stopped using their home-made sauces and switched to store-bought products.

“We will continue to do so from now on,” the post said.

Acting director of

Albury’s public health unit, Alison Nikitas, said yesterday The Burger Bar closed voluntarily.

Mrs Nikitas said

officers had interviewed 70 of the suspected cases and defended delays in making the outbreak public.

“It has been a busy week,” she said.

“We were made aware of a potential problem by the Albury Base Hospital last Sunday.

“Our officers began

investigating on Monday and council inspectors were sent to the eatery that afternoon.

“At that stage we were unsure of what the cause was and notified GPs and emergency departments on Wednesday when the cases were confirmed (as salmonella).”

Yesterday a spokeswoman for the NSW Food Authority said it was awaiting the results of the food samples.

“The NSW Food

Authority has a range of enforcement tools available but in serious cases fines of up to $400,000 for a corporation and up to $83,000 for an individual apply,” she said.

Just goes to show more needs to be done to regulate home made food products! From restaurant’s to home made food product's being sold at the markets! I think it is horrible it took so long for this problem to become public!!! People just seem more worried about reputations and money than the health of others!!!

It is lucky a more serious outbreak of Salmonella food poisoning has not occured. It is unfair of the Burger Bar owners to blame their egg supplier. This displays a lack of knowledge of how these cases occur. Yes the Salmonella had to be present in or on the eggs (as it possibly is in other venues), however if proper kitchen food safety practices were adhered to it is extremely unlikely that it would have gone any further. The mayonnaise would need to be left unrefrigerated at room temperature for a period of time to allow the bacteria growth to occur. Food safety procedures are designed to limit bacteria growth in such cases. Not the farmers fault, educate your staff on food safety dont look for a scapegoat.

Rally Up - You would have to be blind to have missed this appalling story splattered across the Border Mail front page which was aimed to be nothing but detrimental to the owners of, in my opinion, the best burger house on the border. If on the more than one occasion that I can remember reading the border mail only to pick spelling mistakes, the good people of Albury/Wodonga and surrounding areas refused to buy the paper for a week, then I would have no reason to be writing this letter. I believe in sharing the news but when people's livelihoods are in the balance you should re-think your options for a front page story. I can only hope that this opportunity for distasteful free advertising will be turned around to show this small business some further free advertising to entice their customers back. This town is small enough to spread rumors by itself, but not big enough to hide from them. Come on Albury/Wodonga get behind your local businesses and give them a chance at surviving, as one hiccup should not close your doors forever. Dean Street Trader

Yes, an apology was/is definitely needed but more importantly they need to take responsability. With so many people affected I feel it is unlikely they will recover. People talk. I will never go back after what I've been and continue to go through.

Good on you Paul, I agree totally, and when the dust has settled we will see if NSW food authority will come up with some credible recomendations to help prevent this from happening again.

The Burger Bar is currently closed, and as far as I am concerned should remain so forever more. To charge customers to make them ill and then sit on their hands until they can find a rotten egg to blame, shows they have no concern about anything but their weekly takings. With in excess of 60 people from the Border ill from this businesses activities, I would hope criminal proceedings will proceed promptly.

As the mother of a son and his girlfriend who are two of the confirmed cases we are quite upset that this establishment stayed open for so long when there was an obvious problem. My son and his girlfriend both spent time on the hospital on a drip have had to miss work using their much needed sick leave and they are both still not well after a week. The restaurant should be apologising to these people. I know that some of their staff were also sick so you would think that they knew something was going on and should have shut earlier. The health department needs to really look at this very closely. Best wishes to all that have had this dreadful illness keep you spirits up hopefully you will get over it soon.
