Businesses: put an end to this mess

16 May, 2008 10:10 AM
ALBURY business owners want more action from police and the council to stop the city’s graffiti war.

Simply Fed owner Jan McGrath and her husband, Lawrence, are tired of being an easy target in Amp Lane.

“We are a constant target and the graffiti is a real eyesore,” she said.

“It takes time and money to fix this and it’s not just graffiti, it’s broken windows and eggs being splattered on the shop fronts.”

Rival gangs have sprayed walls, windows and signs to claim their turf with another attack between 11pm Wednesday and 7.30am yesterday.

Vandals used silver spray paint and black texta to graffiti tags on windows and walls outside retail shops in Dean Street and Amp Lane.

Mrs McGrath said the S2S sprayed on their shop would be time-consuming to fix as the colour was unusual and would have to be matched.

“I am concerned the council don’t think it’s in their power to do something — perhaps CCTV is the way to go,” she said.

Spotlight at Harvey Norman’s new centre in Borella Road was also targeted on Tuesday afternoon and again on Wednesday morning.

Store manager Lesley Webb was furious when she arrived at work yesterday.

“It’s terrible — we’re inconvenienced and have to spend money to get this cleaned off,” she said.

She was later told that the paint used was too strong to remove with chemicals and would have to be repainted.

“The cleaner said it was a special kind of paint, one used especially for concrete,” she said.

A sales assistant at Grant’s Mitre 10 in Elgin Boulevard, Wodonga said the store had a problem with underage children trying to buy spray paint over the Christmas period.

“We turned them down then but kids have been back trying to get their hands on some over the past couple of months,” Darrel Cross said.
