Caltex to defend diesel stop

06 Feb, 2012 12:00 AM
OIL giant Caltex will get its chance to defend plans for an unmanned, 24-hour diesel stop in Lavington tonight.

But the Albury Council community forum will also hear from objectors to the project.

More than 40 objections and a 418-signature petition were received by the council when the plans were first advertised last September.

Caltex’s plans include decommissioning the existing service station in Union Road to build a 24-hour diesel station with four bowsers, two underground fuel tanks and an unmanned credit card facility.

In a letter that forms part of tonight’s agenda, Albury Council wrote to the oil giant’s planning consultants last October telling them that the plans should either be abandoned or amended.

The chief concerns outlined by the council’s town planning team leader David Christy included traffic, impact on neighbours, hazardous materials, what would be demolished at the existing petrol station and the fact the site did not have a 24-hour licence.

Caltex resubmitted plans late last month.

But a submission by Habitat Planning on behalf of objectors says traffic numbers have been underestimated and that noise and security will be issues.

Papers before the council tonight claim that there will be many more than 39 vehicles a day visiting the site, with estimates suggesting 140 trucks already use the existing petrol station each day.

“Real traffic numbers need to be used to assess traffic impacts and noise impacts,” their submission says.

“Twenty-four-hour operation is not compatible with the surrounding residential area, as it will generate traffic impacts outside normal business hours and potential odour issues from night refuelling while residents are home.

“The site is located within a predominantly residential area.

“An unmanned petrol station in a residential area has the potential for security and safety issues including unreported diesel spills.”

The community forum will be held at the Albury Council chambers from 6pm.
