A SUPPORTER of evicted The Carriers lessees Cate Nightingale and Michael McNamara has set up camp outside the Wodonga hotel.
Long-time patron Mark Starford late on Wednesday moved his caravan out to the front of the hotel where he will stay “24-7” until at least tomorrow.
Staff and patrons of the hotel have been coming and going out of the caravan, with Mr Starford hosting a card game on Wednesday night.
It used to occur in the pub.
Mr Starford adopted a conciliatory tone yesterday, saying he would like to see a reconciliation between pub owner Greg Evans, a Wagga-based businessman, and the lessees.
“We’re not protesters and we’re not here to point fingers and say who is in the right and who is in the wrong,” he said.
“We’re here to support Cate and Mick in their efforts to get the hotel up back up and running again.”
Mr Evans took possession of the pub this week, locking out the lessees after he said they failed to pay overdue rent.
The “Save the Carriers” Facebook page had 642 fans by 8pm last night, less than 24 hours after it was created.
“Due to unfair circumstances the carriers will not be open for trade ... help us get our pub back,” the page originators wrote.
The group is organising a rally outside the hotel on Saturday, from 11am.
Mr Starford, who is away from work due to a neck injury and is receiving WorkCover payments, said he had been heartened by the response, with passing drivers voicing their support via vehicle horns.
