Chryslers find new home

10 Mar, 2010 01:00 AM
UP to 600 Chrysler cars are set to descend on Wodonga this weekend as the Gateway Lakes are unveiled as the newest major event location in the city.

The car celebration has been shifted from Belvoir Park after two years and co-organiser Rod Taylor believes it will be the last time Chryslers on the Murray needs to move after having been previously hosted by Noreuil and Oddies Creek parks in Albury.

“This will be our fourth and final venue change,” he said.

“We can put a thousand cars easily on there at Gateway Lakes and we expect we’re going to get 600 this year.”

Wodonga Council events co-ordinator Jane Evans said Gateway Lakes, west of Lincoln Causeway opposite the visitor information centre, provided 70,000sq m of space and the city was aiming to stage other expos, concerts and circuses at the site.

The area on the other side the causeway near Three Monkeys Tavern, which has been a site for circuses, is 5000sq m.

“The Gateway Lakes has been an ongoing project for the past three years, it’s a purpose-built site and the council has spent quite a bit of time and money getting that site up to scratch,” Mrs Evans said.

“That has included irrigation with pipes and taps, access to three-phase power and constant grading of Lemke Road, which is unsealed.”

Mr Taylor expects 8000 people to inspect the Chryslers, with the US muscle cars of the 1960s and the early 1970s the feature for the 18th annual show.

Plymouth Barracudas, Plymouth Roadrunners, Dodge Chargers and Dodge Challengers are among that category.

Another feature will be the first legally registered right hand drive 2009 Dodge Challenger.

A $5 entry fee will apply for adults with Mr Taylor hoping to donate $5000 to the Thurgoona Rural Fire Service and $5000 to the Bonegilla CFA.

The cars will be on-site throughout the weekend with the show and shine on Sunday from 8am to 1pm.
