 City snubs mayors' conference

City snubs mayors' conference

17/11/2008 11:36:00 PM
THE City of Ballarat will not have a representative at today's inaugural meeting of the Australian Council of Local Government.

Mayors from across Australia gathered in Canberra yesterday for the meeting, which will discuss ways the Federal Government can help strengthen local governments.

Prime Minister Kevin Rudd and a host of other senior ministers will be in attendance today to talk directly to local councils about a range of issues, with infrastructure a particular focus.

But the City of Ballarat has not sent anyone to the meeting.

A council spokeswoman said the upcoming election and a lack of notice about the meeting were among the reasons no one attended. She said representatives of the Central Highlands Mayors and CEOs forum, of which Ballarat

is part, were attending the meeting and had discussed issues to be raised with the Ballarat council.

Ballarat MP Catherine King is also attending and is co-chairing a session with Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government Anthony Albanese.

"The council will, for the first time, allow a direct dialogue between the Commonwealth and local communities on issues of national significance, including the provision of economic and community infrastructure," Ms King said.

"The session will allow the government to discuss its plans to establish a four-year community infrastructure renewal fund."

In a welcome message, Mr Rudd said the meeting would help councils and communities shape Australia's future.

"This meeting is also an opportunity to work together to solve the challenges facing local and regional communities, such as urban congestion, delivering high-quality services and improving the quality of life in our regional

towns, suburbs and major cities," he said.

This will save many thousands of rates payers dollars. Less junkets and more services on the ground for the ratepayers. Yay we all say. Keep up the good decision making whoever made it. We should have enough local talent to solve the problems that confront Ballarat without the need to travel on a plane to solve them.

This is very disappointing news. For elected councillors, my understanding is that the current term ends at around 6am on 29 November 2008. Being in caretaker mode doesn't lessen their current responsibility or accountability.

I am so glad we did not send a representive to the Mayors conference we dont have the calibre of person to send any way,why make a bigger fool of ourselves. Ballarat is totally off the radar in Camberra and will stay that way until we have a whole new council with people that can proudly represent us at these type of events and push for our fair share of money and what ever else is going to get up some worthwhile infastructure projects in this city

Thank goodness our current mayor was not sent to the mayors' conference, he is an embarrassment in speech and looks and makes Ballarat look a joke.

This seems disgraceful to me- a view that seems supported by the use of the word "snubs" in the headline for this item. If we are not prepared to be part of the consultative process (expressing our needs, listening to the needs of other councils, and sharing in the working through of universal issues) we do not deserve to have a viable city in which to live. Immediate and local commitments in this case need to take second place to the good of the nation.

16/12/2008 | So we now have desperate parents attempting to bribe teachers to get their children into a selective high school. What a sad indictment of our education policies, the holy grail of which is parental choice.
