KRIS Isherwood is a man who spends many hours on Port Macquarie’s waterways but when it comes to the plans for our foreshore one of his major concerns is about a bridge.
Mr Isherwood, the owner of Port Macquarie Kayak Tours, has a relationship with Port Macquarie’s waterfront that is more intense than most people.
But it is the plans for improved pedesterian access on the Buller St bridge which pleases him most about the foreshore plans.
“I often see pedestrians stepping off the footpath onto the road to allow others to pass as they’re walking across the bridge,” the 33-year-old businessman said.
Under the plans on exhibition until November 7, that access will be significantly improved.
Mr Isherwood’s kayaking business is one of many businesses which ply their trade in the great outdoors.
Clients regularly pass comment about the uniqueness of the foreshore experience from Kooloonbung Creek Nature Park wetlands to the ocean.
Mr Isherwood, reflecting on the foreshore concept plan, said the foreshore and breakwall were the jewel in Port Macquarie’s crown.
“The breakwall is something that everybody who visits Port Macquarie walks along at least once in their stay,” he said.
“It should be fully maintained.”
He started the kayak business 10 years ago and offers a range of tours, from a tour through the mangroves and wetlands surrounding Kooloonbung Creek, to surf kayaking at the beaches.
“One minute you are in the wetlands in total peace and quiet and 30 minutes later you are surfing waves off the beach,” Mr Isherwood said.
Consultants have developed a vision covering Port Macquarie’s foreshore from Town Beach to Quality Sails Resort and Port Macquarie-Hastings Council is encouraging people to have their say.
