Cord blood support key to saving lives

21 Apr, 2009 12:00 AM
THE Inner Wheel Club of Albury will hit the streets on Friday to rally support for Coin for a Cord Day.

The national event helps fund research into the use of cord blood, found in a baby’s umbilical cord, which has a high concentration of marrow cells used in transplants for children with blood disorders including acute leukaemia.

Marcia Armstrong from the Inner Wheel Club of Albury said in some cases, cord blood gave sick children a “second chance at life”.

“The use of cord blood to combat and cure many blood disorders is a modern day exercise in recycling,” she said.

“Giving life today and saving lives tomorrow.”

As part of the Coin for a Cord Day, members of Inner Wheel will sell merchandise and take donations at shopping centres across the Border.

Merchandise will include teddy bears, pens, soft footballs, lip balm, bracelets, fridge magnets note pads and bookmarks.
