PLANS for a united Orange City Council working together for the community appear on the brink of collapse just two months into the new council term.
At an explosive meeting on Thursday evening, grudges, personality clashes and political differences culminated in a series of attacks in the council chamber.
During one incident, Cr John Davis was forced to retract an accusation that Greens councillors Jeremy Buckingham and Neil Jones wanted the controversial Hub proposal scrapped because the “party machine had got to them”.
Cr Jones quickly rose to his feet to angrily reject the accusation, immediately causing uproar among other councillors in the chamber.
In another icy exchange, Cr Fiona Rossiter and Mayor Reg Kidd had a tense and frank argument about the supposed exclusion of some councillors from representing the city at interstate conferences.
It seems few councillors took the opportunity to cool down overnight, with many yesterday telling the Central Western Daily the prospect of a united and undivided council was all but non-existent.
Mayor Reg Kidd also yesterday said he planned to crack down on the behaviour and conduct of councillors.
“We have got to let personal egos and political aspirations become secondary to the job at hand, I think the last election showed us that’s what the people want,” he said.
“Of course you have to accept some people have a different opinion on things but from my perspective I think we the council is starting to work together despite the occasional difference.”
