Council set to back Biggest Carbon Loser

5/10/2008 11:51:00 PM
REDLAND City Council is willing to spend up to $19,000 sponsoring a proposed Network Ten program called The Biggest Carbon Loser.

The eight-part series would raise community awareness of climate change by showing how families could reduce their energy use and carbon emissions, according to a mayoral briefing note presented at last week's general meeting.

Mayor Melva Hobson said the television show would be a joint iniative between Network Ten and the South East Queensland Council of Mayors and would be broadcast across the region.

Cr Hobson told councillors the $413,000 total sponsorship cost would be divided among the region's councils in line with population levels, with Redland City Council's contribution likely to fall between $9743 and $18,891.

Her mayoral briefing note said the show would be promoted through interviews with mayors and/or councillors during live weather crosses on the nightly news, and would fit in with the council's climate change goals.

But Division 9 Councillor Karen Williams said the council would be better off spending the money on thousands of energy-efficient lightbulbs.

Councillors voted to give Cr Hobson authority to approve a sponsorship deal if the Council of Mayors decides to proceed with the proposal. The group is due to meet on Friday.

Does she have any evidence linking man to climate change? Just a stunt.

its a bit tough when the ratepayers have to fund the mayor's photo opportunities. melva, if you just do something useful, the photos will be done for nothing.

Man made global warming is a non event.Try natural cycles of climate change that occur. The same thing is happening on mars so is my car adding to this? Now as far as politicians go allow me to quote from an article that can be found at http://www.globalresearch.ca/index.php?context=va&aid=5086 Even if Al Gore was telling the truth about the causes of global warming, or climate change, which most evidence points to the fact that he is not, but even if he was, he would still be a hypocrite. It was recently revealed that Al Gore doesn’t exactly practice what he preaches, such as what he said in his Academy Award acceptance speech, “People all over the world, we need to solve the climate crisis. It's not a political issue; it's a moral issue.” Well, in that case, why is it that a recent study by the Tennessee Center for Policy Research found that one of Al Gore’s mansions uses 20 times the amount of electricity that the average American does. I don't believe for a minute that those in council/government are going to go without their luxuries at our expense i might add.

90% of the worlds scientists and we still have people believing websites set-up by petro-chemical companies. I don't want the ignorant looking after my kids future. I think the TV is the best way to keep the message out there. Between it and the internet you should be able to cover even the sceptics!

Petro Chemical companies did not teach polar bears to swim up to 100 km at a time which is a fact ignored by the Gore camp and his followers who want us to believe they are in danger of their ice disappearing because of us. I don't dispute we are going through a "change" however it is a natural "cycle" the earth goes through and NOT caused by us at all. If it is our cars, industry and houses then why is the same thing happening on other planets such as mars? This is scientific fact. If a future is one where we pay a tax per km for driving our cars like they want bought in for europe then here then this is not a future i want for my kids.A future where you must conform for the so called common good for mankind and the environment which is nothing more than a money making scam and not to mention taking away our freedom and rights for the sake of their one world government domination. If it was just a case of governments vs the oil companies then why doesn't the government allow hydrogen powered vehicles and power stations to be put to use? That's right because they can make no money from hydrogen as the fuel (water) can be obtained too easily(even ocean water can be used just use a stainless steel engine). This would also collapse the world's economy so if you want to talk environmental good our governments are hypocrites. As i said earlier i can guarantee the politicians will not be going without their extravagant lifestyle and luxuries along with the rich and famous. In the end it will be the poor who will suffer and the middle class will be joining them.

i tend to think it is man-made, but really does it matter why its happening. if the world can do something to allievate the situation and perhaps save people's lives and countries, lets do it anyway. we all pay rates to get stuff for the communial good, this is the same only much much bigger. still think melva should earn her photos, not waste our rate money getting her photos taken. achievements will get her all the photos she wants.
