Police have not ruled out alcohol as a factor in a car accident that killed a local man on Sunday night and have downplayed reports the driver absconded from the scene of the crash.
Police and emergency crews were called to a single-vehicle accident on the Burrendong Way about 7pm on Sunday night, where a 30-year-old male passenger of the vehicle was killed after being thrown out of the car.
Police said the car was travelling out of Mumbil when the driver lost control and it careered off the road and rolled, throwing the passenger out of the vehicle.
Yesterday, Orana Local Area Command Inspector Matt Goodwin confirmed the passenger died at the scene from injuries sustained in the crash.
“The vehicle was travelling out of Mumbil and lost control before leaving the road and rolling. One occupant appears to be thrown and he suffered fatal injuries,” he said.
A spokesperson from the NSW Ambulance Service said the vehicle rolled on its roof and the passenger was trapped under the vehicle.
Police crash investigators and forensics were called to the scene and an investigation is currently underway.
Police said they were unsure of the cause of the crash at this stage, and did not know whether alcohol was a factor in the fatal incident. There has been speculation the driver fled from the scene of the accident, but police could not confirm this information.
“We are investigating what we know to be the case now,” Inspector Goodwin said.
Inspector Goodwin confirmed that no arrests or charges had been made.
According to police the driver of the vehicle was taken to Wellington Hospital for treatment of his injuries.
