Death driver jailed for 8 years

A DRUNK driver who killed his girlfriend when he crashed in South Albury last year has been jailed for eight years.

Justin Blake Smith was today in the District Court in Albury imprisoned to that term and given a non-parole period of six years.

He had pleaded guilty to aggravated dangerous driving causing death at an earlier hearing in the local court.

Amanda Bowen, 21, was a passenger in Smith's car when he crashed in Atkins Street on September 21.

She suffered massive head injuries after Smith tried to take a sharp corner at 92kmh when driving with a blood- alcohol level of 0.188 per cent

In sentencing today, District Court judge Martin Blackmore described Smith's driving as "prolonged, serious and aggravated".

Relatives of Smith and Miss Bowen were in court for sentencing today.
