A WODONGA duo’s tongue-in-cheek song of devotion to their home city has been undergoing a revival thanks to internet video site YouTube.
Damien Batty and Kathy Brown created Take Me Home, Melbourne Road in 2001 and performed it at a Wodonga Baptist Church talent night, complete with a video clip featuring blokes up a tree swigging cans, winning first prize.
The song, which rewords US folk hero John Denver’s classic Take Me Home, Country Roads, lay dormant after that one and only public showing until Mr Batty discovered a video of the 2001 performance on his computer.
Called Melbourne Road Parody, the video went up last week and has already attracted more than 100 hits and some comments.
It features lines such as “Sleep in Sat’day, watch the footy, mow the lawns then drive the ute to Lavvy” and a chorus of “Melbourne Road, take me home to a? place I belong, West Wodonga, Baranduda, take me home, Melbourne Road”.
“We just tried to write down as many cliches about Wodonga as we could and it all just come together so quickly,” Mr Batty, an army health instructor, said.
“We might follow up and do some more funny songs but at the moment we are just wanting to share it with people and see what kind of response it gets.
“So far there’s been no backlash, which is good.
“I’ve shown it to a few guys at the army and they just said, ‘you’re a dag’.”
The duo have remained in touch over the years but never joined forces musically since.
Mrs Brown, 30, is a mother of three and part-time singer and Mr Batty, 35, is a multi-instrumentalist and member of band Radar Mars.
Mr Batty said the song was born out of a genuine love of Wodonga.
“I’ve got to go to Sydney for two years for an army posting but then I’m coming straight back,” he said.
“We’ve got everything here, we’ve got the wineries and those beautiful towns around us and the people are really great, there’s a great feel to the place.”
