Doing it for the children

6/11/2008 1:42:00 PM
With long beards and a sack full of toys for disadvantaged children, these men may have looked just like Santa if it weren’t for the leather jackets, tattoos and motorcycles.

The Tenterfield and District Social Motorcycle and Salvation Army Christmas Toy Run is set to hit the road on Saturday, November 29, to deliver toys to Tenterfield’s underprivileged children.

The bikers will collect at the Sir Henry Parkes Memorial Public School at 10.30am and set off at 11am for a 120km round trip to Stanthorpe with stops at various collection points to gather toys and brighten the Christmas of some of the area’s most disadvantaged children.

“There are a lot of disadvantagedkids in town, and they’re not just the ones you might think of. This year is going to be hard for a lot of people due to the economic downturn,” said event organiser Wayne Lusty.

Mr Lusty said the run is in its 24th year and has grown from just a few bikes to include around 100 riders from Tenterfield, Deepwater, Stanthorpe and as far away as Toowoomba.

“The run caters for every type of rider, no matter how experienced they are. We even had some riders last year that were still on their p-plates,” he said.

“The community is very supportive of us. The Salvation Army wraps and distributes all the toys, TADBA supplies all the food for the barbecue and the Lions cook it.”

Donations of toys and non-perishable food can be left at Burgers on Rouse, Wallangarra and Jennings Hotels, Ballandean Tavern, Auto Two Stanthorpe and the Salvation Army Shop in Tenterfield.

“Anybody can donate, they don’t have to be bikers to donate,” Mr Lusty said.

B Donations can be made at the locations previously listed, or call Wayne Lusty on 6736 4300 or Tony Watt on 6736 1078 to collect donations if needed.

16/12/2008 | So we now have desperate parents attempting to bribe teachers to get their children into a selective high school. What a sad indictment of our education policies, the holy grail of which is parental choice.
