Eating away at Orange’s reputation

Tourists visiting Orange over the long weekend had to look hard to find the city’s much touted food culture.

Despite efforts to promote Orange as a food lovers’ tourist destination, the last night of the long weekend saw some visitors looking around for something to do.

Belgravia at the Union Bank said it had at least six calls from customers wanting to know if they were open and looking for other restaurants.

The restaurant said it had a busy weekend with a constant stream of customers, many of whom had travelled to Orange for the holiday.

“[On Sunday and yesterday] we only opened for lunch but it was very consistent,” Belgravia’s Belinda Clift said.

“We had lots of tourists and locals ... Friday night was very busy with a lot of people who’d come up from Sydney.”

Robert’s Bakery was one of the few hospitality businesses open yesterday and also reported steady business.

Chamber of Commerce president Jeff Whitton said there could be large profits to be made from opening on a long weekend in a city like Orange.

“I don’t know why things like the coffee shops don’t open, I’d think there would be a bit of business about,” Mr Whitton said.

However, he said the decision was best left to the business owners.

“They’re closer to their business than I am, though, so they’d know if it was worth paying to put the staff on or not.”

Mr Whitton said it was also common for Orange hotels to close early on Sundays - even during a long weekend featuring an NRL grand final.
