Enrol to vote in council poll

25/09/2008 11:42:00 AM
THE Victorian Electoral Commission (VEC) is calling on residents in Latrobe City to enrol to vote in November's council elections.

Australian citizens who have turned 18 and are not enrolled to vote must do so by Friday, 3 October, according to electoral commissioner Steve Tully.

Mr Tully also reminded people who have changed either their residential or postal address to update their enrolment by this date, or risk being unable to vote.

Voting is compulsory for all enrolled Australian citizens under 70 who live in the municipality. This includes both property owners and tenants.

Enrolment forms are available at any local council, post office, Centrelink, Australian Electoral Commission office, or Coles supermarket, or can be downloaded from www.vec.vic.gov.au.

Completed enrolment forms must reach the VEC by no later than 4pm on Friday, 3 October.

Those residents already on the state electoral roll at their current address are automatically enrolled for the November council elections.

There are also special enrolment categories for occupiers and non-Australian citizens who pay rates, company nominees, and for people who occupy a property and have written permission from the owner to vote in their place.

For further details contact Latrobe City Council on 1300367700.

People can also check their enrolment details during business hours at locations listed at www.vec.vic.gov.au from Monday, 29 September to Friday, 3 October.

For more information on enrolment, or to check that you are on the state roll, telephone the VEC on 131832 or visit www.vec.vic.gov.au.

16/12/2008 | So we now have desperate parents attempting to bribe teachers to get their children into a selective high school. What a sad indictment of our education policies, the holy grail of which is parental choice.
