Festival given green light

31/10/2008 10:17:00 AM
LOWER Belford will be the site for a music and art festival after Singleton Council gave the green light to proceed on Monday night.

However, councillors expressed some concerns over the event, and only gave approval for one concert to proceed, rather than the six over three years requested in the development application.

The event will be used as a trial for possible future events.

Organisers Red Floor Productions, who are the team behind the Gum Ball festivals, are free to apply again for multiple concerts at the conclusion of the first.

The major concerns from councillors and nearby residents who used public access to object to the proposal were security, alcohol consumption and noise.

While no alcohol will be sold at the event, people are permitted to bring their own.

Organiser Matt Johnston said there would be adequate security to deal with any unruly behaviour, and there would be control measures in place to limit the amount of alcohol brought into the event.

He said the festival would not be a dangerous environment to be in and would be promoted as a family friendly event.

“It is a small, boutique event; a little party for people who enjoy music and art,” Mr Johnston said.

Mr Johnston said the stage would be positioned in such a way that provided the least imposition on nearby residents in regards to noise generated from the event.

Cr Paul Nichols said it was great that a young resident of Singleton had some initiative and was willing to have a go at holding events for the community.

“It sounds like a good event and I might come down and have a listen myself,” Cr Nichols said.

“However, the big issue remains is this the right place to hold the event?

“I think we should give him an opportunity with one event and see what he can do with it.”

Cr Alison Howlett agreed that one event was the right option for councillors.

“We have to be mindful that the biggest impact on a person is noise, and while I support any young person willing to have a go, we also have to support people who have chosen to live in a quiet area.

“So the organisers are on notice that we want a proper event, with proper security and noise reduction.”

Councillors unanimously agreed to approve the one event.

The ‘Sculpture in the Woods’ festival will be held at the Johnston property in Lower Belford from midday on Saturday November 22.

It is a one day event and is limited to 500 people attending.

The event will feature a hands-on sculpture competition, food stalls, and will feature music performances from The White Russians, Australian blues award winners Chase the Sun, Brisbane act The John Steel Singers, and Sydney funk band The Bakery.

16/12/2008 | So we now have desperate parents attempting to bribe teachers to get their children into a selective high school. What a sad indictment of our education policies, the holy grail of which is parental choice.
