FORMER AFL superstar Brendan Fevola could play for Yarrawonga in the Ovens and Murray Football League this season.
The former Carlton and Brisbane full-forward yesterday said he was excited about the prospect of becoming the biggest name to join the competition since Brownlow medallist Brian Wilson played for Lavington in the early 1990s.
“It’s pretty exciting, I’m looking forward to it,” Fevola said.
“I can’t tell you which club, it’s only very early in negotiations.
“I only spoke to this club for the first time two days ago.
“I’ve got a meeting with my manager on Monday so I will know more after that.”
Speculation was rife last month Fevola was set to join Yarrawonga, something he and Pigeons president Glenn Brear denied at the time.
But the dual Coleman medallist sent the Ovens and Murray world into a frenzy yesterday afternoon when he tweeted: “Think I might play footy in the O&M League this year people .
“Exited (sic) so I brought (sic) my self a Mc chicken”.
Brear last night couldn’t rule out Fevola playing for the Pigeons this year.
“We will be saying nothing as a club until such time there is, and if there is, anything to declare,” he said.
Fevola said he watched Damian Houlihan, the brother of former Carlton teammate Ryan, dominate for Corowa-Rutherglen against Wangaratta Rovers in an O?and?M match in 2001.
Sacked by the Brisbane Lions last year, Fevola was diagnosed with depression, admitted to a gambling addiction and spent a stint in rehab before playing in the VFL with the Casey Scorpions last season.
Fevola was second in the league goalkicking, finishing behind prized Wodonga Raiders recruit Patrick Rose.
Another of his former Blues teammates Matthew Lappin, brother of dual Wangaratta premiership coach Jason, told Fevola he would be joining a high-standard competition.
Fevola, 31, who is recovering from golden staph after being hospitalised after a spider bite, said he was likely to play only home matches with his new club.
“Skinny Lappin told me it’s pretty good footy, just a bit below the VFL,” he said.
“It will probably just be home games that I play, I’m getting pretty old now.
“I’ve got to get fit again but my body actually feels pretty good, it’s the first time in ages I haven’t had an operation for a footy injury.
“I obviously had the spider bite which got infected and that has set me back a little bit.”
