First train travels rail bypass

15 Mar, 2010 11:33 AM
THE first train this morning travelled on Wodonga's rail bypass.

The locomotive was hauling several wagons laden with concrete sleepers when it travelled along the southern end of the bypass about 7.20am.

It reversed along the track under the Melrose Drive overpass and past Wodonga's new train station which is being constructed.

The trip follows contrators begining the installation of sleepers and tracks yesterday.

Work has started at the southern end of the bypass with contractors yesterday securing sleepers at what will be Wodonga’s new railway station, near the Melrose Drive freeway overpass.

The Wodonga railway project will take the line out of the city’s central business district, remove 11 rail crossings and open up 20ha for redevelopment in the heart of the city.
