SNOW and thunderstorms forecast for this weekend are part of a bizarre weather pattern which could produce the wildest November weather in years.
The maximum temperature predicted for today is 10 degrees, 11 degrees below the monthly average.
A cold front is to move over in the afternoon, bringing thunderstorms. Hail and snow are forecast to fall in high areas tonight and tomorrow morning.
A sheep graziers warning has been issued for this evening, and gailforce winds are expected to pass over from the south-east corner of the state.
Bureau of Meterology forecaster Chris Webb said the “unusual” and “dramatic” weather pattern is set to result in the coldest November day since 2001, when the maximum was 9.3 degrees on November 19.
The last report of snow in November was on this day in 1996, which Mr Webb said was a bizarre coincidence and definitely out of the ordinary.
“The records for the last 50 years show the snow season ending earlier than November, so if it snows it will be very unusual,” Mr Webb said.
“[The weather forecast] is an unusual extreme example of a springtime cold front.”
Mr Webb said spring is a time for transition in the weather, renowned for cold fronts which cause stormy weather.
