Flood warning for North East rivers

A MAJOR flood warning for the Ovens, King, Buffalo and Buckland Rivers has been issued.

Rainfall totals up to 18mm have been recorded in the Ovens and King catchment in the three hours to 5am today.

Rainfall totals around 10 to 20 mm are possible over the next 12 hours. Stream rises are continuing, with moderate to major flooding occurring in the Ovens Basin.

Ovens River upstream of Bright

The Ovens River at Bright is at 3.19 metres and rising (moderate flood level 3.60 metres).

The river is expected to exceed moderate flood level in the next few hours. Some houses in Wallace Street Bright are at risk of flooding. Residents should consider leaving before this occurs.

Buckland River

The Buckland River at Harris Lane is steady around 4.1 metres (major flood level 4.2 metres). Further

rises are possible as a result of forecast rainfall. Police are planning to door knock to alert these

residents.

Myrtleford

The Ovens River at Eurobin is currently at 6.62 metres and rising (major flood level 5.5 metres).

Further rises are expected as a result of forecast rainfall and a peak around 6.8 to 7.0 metres is

possible.

Buffalo River

The Buffalo River downstream of Lake Buffalo is currently at 7.47 metres (major flood level 5.0

metres) and rising. A peak around 7.8 metres is expected during Sunday morning.

Rocky Point

The Ovens River at Rocky Point is at 4.96 metres (moderate flood level 4.4 metres) and continuing to

rise. The river is expected to exceed major flood level (5.2 metres) in the next few hours. A peak

around 5.8 metres is possible during Sunday evening.

Upper King River

The King River at Cheshunt peaked at 2.79 metres (major flood level 2.60 metres) around midnight

Saturday. The river is currently at 2.56 metres (moderate flood level 2.3 metres) and falling. Moderate

flooding will continue around and downstream of Cheshunt during Sunday morning.

Docker Road

The King River at Docker Road is at 4.24 metres and rising (major flood level 4.3 metres). A peak

above the major flood level is expected during Sunday afternoon.

Wangaratta

The Ovens River at Wangaratta is currently at 11.55 metres (Minor Flood Level 11.9 metres) and

rising slowly. The river is likely to exceed minor flood level between 7:00 and 8:00 AM Sunday. The

river is likely to exceed moderate flood level (12.4 metres) during Sunday evening. Forecast of a peak

will be provided once upstream gauges have peaked.
