Gangland DVD walks out door

10/05/2008 12:09:00 PM
COPIES of gangland drama series Underbelly have sold out in less than a day at some Albury outlets.

The series titled Underbelly Uncut went on sale in NSW on Thursday with signs warning Victorians not to buy the series in DVD retail and rental shops.

Wow Sight and Sound store manager Andrew Orzeszko said Underbelly had been the best selling new release since the store opened late last year.

“It’s the most sought after new release and copies have been flying off the shelf since our stock arrived on Thursday,” he said.

“Because it is prohibited in Victoria, it is in such high demand.”

Mr Orzeszko said it was likely they would sell all of their stock.

“I think we will run out by the end of the day or early tomorrow (Saturday) but we have more coming in,” he said.

Angus and Robertson sold its five copies and is now taking orders.

Angus and Robertson store manager Sue Dumaresq said the DVDs went on the shelves late Thursday afternoon and were all sold by lunchtime yesterday.

Mid States Records in Dean Street sold its DVDs before they even arrived.

The shop had more than 20 pre-orders before the DVDs arrived on Thursday morning but they expect to have more delivered in the coming days.

Some Victorians living on the border have tried to reserve a copy at some outlets.

“We had a few people from Wangaratta and Melbourne who wanted to reserve a copy or have us send them one but of course we couldn’t,” Mr Orzeszko said.

However Victorians might not have to wait too much longer to see the series on television.

The Nine Network could screen Underbelly in Victoria as early as next week, when the murder trial preventing it from being shown in the state is expected to end.

Victorian Supreme Court Justice Betty King banned the series from screening in Victoria in February, saying it could prejudice the trial of alleged underworld killer Evangelos Goussis, who is accused of killing gangland figure Lewis Moran.
