Highway stretch claims two accidents

20/11/2008 9:14:00 AM
A 51-year-old Queensland man was discharged from Armidale Hospital yesterday following a car accident 20km north of Glen Innes on Tuesday.

At 12:40pm emergency vehicles including four police vehicles, four Volunteer Rescue Association vehicles, an ambulance and three fire engines raced to attend the scene on the New England Highway.

The driver was trapped in the white Ford station wagon for a period of time before the VRA were able to free him. He was transported to Glen Innes and District Hospital before being conveyed to Armidale Hospital with suspected spinal injuries.

Police were not able to confirm the cause of the accident but believe the vehicle attempted to overtake another vehicle in wet conditions when the driver lost control, left the roadside collecting a paddock fence along the way and coming to rest on the eastern side of the road beside a tree.

The accident follows another single vehicle incident involving Queensland residents on the same stretch of road 9km from Glen Innes last Thursday.

At 3:40am on Thursday November 13 a silver Volvo suffered a tyre blow out causing the vehicle to swerve and the rear end to collide with a tree on the side of the road. The 41-year-old male driver and his four passengers, a 17-year-old male, an eleven-year-old male and 14-year-old male and female twins escaped unharmed.

16/12/2008 | So we now have desperate parents attempting to bribe teachers to get their children into a selective high school. What a sad indictment of our education policies, the holy grail of which is parental choice.
