Shattered owner doesn't want to go home after party mayhem

06 Jul, 2009 01:00 AM
A FIRST homebuyer yesterday said she wouldn’t spend another night in her new house after it was trashed during a group attack at her house-warming party.

The woman, 25, who did not want to be named, had invited 10 to 15 of her close friends to celebrate the new purchase on Saturday night.

But a violent brawl with gatecrashers resulted in five party guests being taken to hospital; one of the men was admitted to the intensive care unit with stab wounds.

“The doctor said he was lucky to survive because his wounds were quite bad,” the woman said.

The homeowner, a legal assistant at a Border firm, said her attackers had arrived with knives, hammers, bricks, steel poles and wooden sticks after two of their friends, who had crashed the party, were told to leave for stealing alcohol.

The guests clashed with their assailants out the front of the home.

“But when everybody got pretty badly injured we all barricaded ourselves inside the house,” the woman said.

“They started smashing all the windows and smashed through the door to try and get inside.

“It was terrible.

“They were just coming from everywhere after us and there was nowhere to go.”

The woman said the attack had been traumatic, with blood from the victims staining the walls of her new home.

“I’m a bit shaken up. I’m a bit lost and not sure what to do,” she said.

“(I had felt) excitement to get into the place.

“Now it’s just ruined. I don’t have any feelings for that house anymore. I don’t want to go back.”

Neighbours yesterday told The Border Mail they regularly observed violence in the area, but not often of such scale.

“It’s terrible but it’s not the first time and it won’t be the last time, sadly,” one woman said.

“I’ve been here for 20 years, I’ve seen a lot.

“Experience tells you to see nothing, say nothing.”

Another neighbour, who works in security, said people knew better than to bring drama to his doorstep; he will intervene only when his house or car is under threat.

“I sit in the lounge room with a cricket bat,” he said.

“I don’t want to get in anyone’s business but I will protect my family.”

Albury police are continuing their investigations after the attackers fled from the scene.
