A FAVOURITE lookout has again been vandalised just days after restoration work was completed.
Port Macquarie-Hastings Council recently spent about $6000 upgrading Harry’s Lookout on Pacific Dve.
Just days after the council finished its work a fence post was kicked over and the gate broken.
Long-time Port Macquarie businessman David Edgerley said the senseless destruction was “distressing”.
“Someone has gone to a lot of effort to break open the gates, damage them and pull over a post supporting the gate,” the 61-year-old said.
“My wife and I walk by here about three times a week and every few months there are more examples of petty vandalism.”
Port Macquarie-Hastings Council recently spent thousands of dollars to beautify the area, which is booked almost all year round for weddings.
The council’s acting parks and recreation manager Liam Bulley said it was disappointing to see such a unique tourist attraction damaged.
“We might ask the police to keep a closer eye on the area, but it is difficult to monitor such a secluded spot,” the Bonny Hills resident said.
“Police also are stretched for resources so its a frustrating situation.”
Mr Bulley said it was unlikely the council would consider closing the lookout point over Shelly Beach.
“We’ve managed to repair the gate, but it does not sit straight anymore,” the manager said.
“The fence is there for people’s personal safety and the gate allows hangliders to use the spot as a launching pad.”
